Louis Rees-Zammit reveals messages from Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce after signing for Kansas City Chiefs
Louis Rees-Zammit says Kansas City Chiefs superstars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce both reached out with welcome messages when he signed for the Super Bowl champions last month.
The 23-year-old Welshman sent shockwaves around the world of rugby union in January as he pulled out of Warren Gatland’s Six Nations squad on the eve of the championship and announced his decision to pursue a career in the NFL.
Capped 32 times at international level, Rees-Zammit was considered one of Wales’ great hopes for the future, with Gatland’s team in a period of transition and rebuilding.
But instead, the former Gloucester winger upped sticks and entered a ten-week training camp in Florida as part of the NFL’s international player pathway (IPP), quickly catching the eye of some of the game’s top scouts.
After recording a rapid 4.44-second 40-yard dash at the University of South Florida’s Pro Day, the Cleveland Browns, the New York Jets and the Denver Broncos all expressed an interest in Rees-Zammit’s services.
However, Rees-Zammit knew immediately where he ‘wanted to be’ when the Chiefs – the back-to-back reigning Super Bowl champions – invited him to their training complex.
‘When you step into the facility you just feel like you’re going to win. They have all their Super Bowl trophies straigh
t ahead of you and everyone in the building is so confident, they’re so chatty,’ Rees-Zammit told
